Astigmatism FAQs

Astigmatism is a vision condition that happens when the eyes aren't perfectly round. It's extremely common to have a small degree of astigmatism, but most people don't notice any symptoms from it. Many people who have astigmatism aren't even aware of it. Most people who have astigmatism were born with it. However, some patients will develop it later. At World of Vision in Vero Beach, FL, we have helped out patients select glasses and contacts for astigmatism management for many years.

How Does Astigmatism Affect Vision?

When a person has round eyeballs, light entering the eye is bent evenly in different directions. When you have astigmatism, your eye is instead shaped similar to a football. With this football shape, light comes in and isn't bent evenly in different directions. It is bent one way more than the other. Patients often see things that look blurry as well as distorted in various ways. There are specialty contact lenses and glasses that will help refract light properly.

What Are the Symptoms?

It's common to see things that look blurry. The blurriness is often joined by visual distortions that can make it difficult to make out what objects are. It can also cause patients to get headaches, have problems seeing at night, and have strained eyes from trying to see better.
