Choosing Sunglasses for UV Protection

The right pair of sunglasses can give you confidence, compliment your face and features and go well with your favorite outfits. But choosing the right pair of sunglasses is not only about being fashion-forward. On especially bright days, a good pair of sunglasses can fend off snow blindness. Sunglasses can help you protect your eyes from dust, bugs, and other things that can be irritating, or even damage your eyes. If you need eyeglasses, contacts, or sunglasses, an optician on our team at World of Vision in Vero Beach, FL, is here to help.

It is also important to choose sunglasses that offer protection from ultraviolet light. UV light can cause severe damage to your eyes over time, or even in an afternoon. In fact, damage from UV rays is the most likely form of harm that can be prevented by wearing sunglasses. Most sunglasses will offer at least a small amount of protection from UV light. These may slow the damage that UV light does to your eyes, but it will not stop it.

To stop UV from causing damage to your eyes, you need sunglasses with proper UV protection. Now that Spring is here, and Summer is on its way, choosing adequate UV protection is important.

How to Choose Sunglasses with Adequate UV Protection

You are unlikely to find a pair of sunglasses with proper UV protection at a gas station or drug store. Good quality UV protection is more expensive, but the damage to your vision that they will prevent is well worth it.

Check on the label, the packaging, or look at the literature inside the package. These should tell you whether you will be properly protected from ultraviolet light. Sunglasses manufacturers tend to promote their products based on UV protection when they can. That means, most of the time, you can trust the claims of the manufacturer.

When buying sunglasses, check the packaging for the following features:

  • Gray lenses for proper color recognition
  • Perfectly matched lenses for color, and free of distortions
  • Lenses that block at least 99% of UVA and UVB light
  • Lenses that filter out between 75% and 90% of visible light

While you can trust that a high-quality sunglasses manufacturer can produce sturdy and stylish glasses- it’s still a good idea to check with your Optometrist to make sure that the glasses you are considering will protect your eyes sufficiently.
