Specialty Contact Lenses

What kind of contact lenses would best suit your eyes, vision problem, lifestyle preferences, and overall state of health? If you're thinking about getting fitted for your first pair of contact lenses, you'll need to consider this question carefully, and the first step toward making the right choice is scheduling a contact lens exam. Here at World of Vision in Vero Beach, FL, our optometrist can evaluate your particular circumstances, guiding you toward the most effective and comfortable contacts for your needs.

The Purpose of a Contact Lens Exam

Eyeglass wearers are used to the routine of having their vision checked, getting a prescription for corrective lenses, and then simply choosing their lens materials and frames. When you opt for contact lenses, however, you also need to take one extra, critical step: undergoing a separate evaluation called a contact lens exam. This extra step is important because your lenses will actually be resting on your eyes, not just perched on either side of your nose. The wrong kind of contacts for your eyes may result in problems ranging from inadequate vision correction to allergic reactions, corneal damage, and chronic dryness.

A contact lens exam makes it much easier to ensure that your contact lenses will fit perfectly, help you see clearly, and give you a comfortable experience. Once our optometrist, Dr. Young, has calculated your corrective prescription, the two of you will discuss such factors as:

  • Whether or not you're sensitive or allergic to particular substances
  • How much time and effort you're willing to put into cleaning or sterilizing your contacts
  • Whether you suffer from underlying issues such as dry eye or keratoconus
  • The type and severity of your refractive error or other vision disorder

Additionally, our optometrist will take detailed measurements of your pupils, irises, and corneas, including the precise curvature of each cornea.

The Ideal Contact Lenses for Your Unique Eyes

No matter what kind of challenges we uncover in the course of your contact lens exam, rest assured that we can help you receive the right kind of contacts for your eyes. You may be fine with standard soft contacts, gas-permeable lenses (to correct a stronger prescription or minimize the accumulation of irritating debris), or a combination of the two (piggyback lenses). We also offer specialized solutions such as toric, scleral, and ortho-k lenses.
